Programs for Ages 5-12

Residential Care at Elizabeth Mitchell Children’s Center

Children and youth who have serious emotional or behavioral problems and have not responded to outpatient services continue their education and are given intensive psychiatric help through our residential programs.  We offer twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week long term treatment.

Our residential program offers a sexual reactivity unit for children in need ages 5 through 12.  This program treats those children who have severe sexual acting out behaviors that might preclude them from admission in other facilities or programs.

Admission Criteria for Residential Care:

  • Current severe behaviors requiring twenty-four hour structure, supervision and treatment
  • Psychiatric condition has deteriorated with likelihood of requiring inpatient care
  • Recent documentation, (last 30 days), of symptoms, high risk behaviors or destructive acts
  • IQ of 60 or above
  • Written recommendation from current mental health provider recommending residential treatment and documentation of failure in outpatient treatment
  • Written (PCP) Primary Care Physician referral

To make a referral to our residential program, fax completed forms to our Access office at (501) 663-6503 or contact the Access office at (501) 666-8686 or toll free at 1-888-868-0023.

    Residential Referral Forms:
    1. Behavior Checklist
    2. Request for PCP Authorization Services
    3. Therapist Letter

Outpatient Services

Outpatient clinics in Little Rock and Jacksonville provide treatment services for children and adolescents who are experiencing emotional or behavioral problems.  Clients can receive individual, family and group therapies as well as psychiatric consultation, evaluation and medication management.

Therapeutic Family Homes Program

The therapeutic foster care program recruits, trains and approves families to serve as therapeutic foster parents for emotionally and behaviorally disturbed children and youth between the ages of 3 to 17.  Children are placed with specially-trained families who can provide intensive support and supervision for children in a home/community based setting. Additional services provided include individual, family and/or group therapy, crisis intervention, case management, psychiatric evaluation/consultation, medication management, and advocacy services.  For enrollment information or information on being trained as therapeutic foster parents, call Leah Keyes at (501) 666-8686, extension 1101.

Shelter for Runaway and Homeless Children

Our Youth Emergency Shelter provides immediate temporary shelter to youth in crisis age 8 to age 17.  The shelter provides a stable environment as well as safety and compassionate support for youth who are in state custody or are considered homeless or runaways.  For more information, contact the shelter at (501) 666-7233.

School-Based Mental Health Services

The Centers works with many schools in central Arkansas to provide school-based mental health services to children age 4 through age 17. This service provides better access to needed treatment for children who are experiencing emotional or behavioral problems.  The professional staff are able to help in linking interventions across home and school. To inquire about school based services, call (501) 666-4949, ext. 3103 or ext. 3135.

Day Treatment

The Day Treatment Services Program provides therapeutic and educational services for children, adolescents and other families.  Children who are not able to function in a regular classroom setting attend our school staffed with certified special education teachers and mental health professionals.  Both therapies and educational services are designed to enhance the overall knowledge, growth, maturity and well-being of children and family members.  For more information, contact Michael Walker at 666-8686, ext. 1233.
